FREEHOLD – A Newark man, who was a former gas station attendant, has received a 52-count indictment on charges for stealing thousands of dollars from customers during his shifts, officials said.

Patrick A. Brown, 48, was charged with 13 counts apiece of third-degree Credit Card Fraud, third-degree False Uttering, third-degree Theft, and fourth-degree Credit Card Theft.

The thefts took place in August 2023 at the Wawa on U.S. Route 9 North. According to officials, Brown would accept a credit card or debit card from a customer then quickly swipe it through an attached device on his personal phone. At the time, this funneled hundreds of dollars into a bank account he controlled, before using the card to pay for the legitimate orders.

Brown was criminally charged the same week as the report of the initial theft, then charged with more offenses as additional victims became known, officials said. His next appearance in Monmouth County Superior Court is scheduled for May 6.

Anyone with information about Brown’s activities, or anyone who believes they may have been victimized, is asked to contact Sgt. Foley at 732-252-1950 or sfoley@twp.freehold.nj.us.

Despite these charges, every defendant is presumed innocent, unless and until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, following a trial at which the defendant has all of the trial rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and State law.
