HAZLET – A 49-year-old man was arrested and charged for a string of arsons that took place over the past five months in Hazlet, officials said.

Albert Caporaso of Hazlet is charged with seven counts of second-degree Aggravated Arson as well as third-degree Criminal Mischief and fourth-degree Resisting Arrest.

First responders were dispatched to a pair of house fires on December 2, 2023. The homes, located on South Laurel Avenue, were abandoned.

According to officials, this was the first of six such callouts to the same addresses, with more fires reported a week later as well as on various dates in a four-month span.

Authorities identified Caporaso as a suspect and later found him attempting to set fire to a storage shed on one of the properties on April 25. He was arrested and lodged in the Monmouth County Correctional Institution (MCCI) to await a first appearance in Monmouth County Superior Court, tentatively scheduled for May 1.

Anyone with additional information about Caporaso’s activities is asked to contact MCPO Detective Michael Donovan III at 800-533-7443 or Hazlet Police Department Detective Russell Surdi at 732-264-0763.

Despite these charges, every defendant is presumed innocent, unless and until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, following a trial at which the defendant has all of the trial rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and State law.
