TOMS RIVER — A 3-year-old child died on Wednesday evening after being pulled out of a swimming pool in the backyard of a township home, authorities confirmed.
According to the Toms River Police Department, a 911 call came in for a report of an unresponsive child who had been pulled out of the water at a home on Hazelwood Drive.
Toms River Police Chief Mitch Little said Fire Chief Travis Veth was first to the scene within 30 seconds of the 911 call, RWJ Barnabas Health paramedics and Brick Township EMS responded as well.
Brick EMS attempted to take the child to Community Medical Center, CPR was administered but the child passed away in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.
A number of scanner news sites including Jersey Coast Emergency News and Exit 82 Scanner News reported that there was no Toms River Township EMS available at the time and that’s why Brick had responded.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office is now the lead investigating agency into what happened.
