MANCHESTER – A motorcyclist was severely injured after a crash Tuesday afternoon on Route 70 in Manchester Township, police said.
Around 3:57 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of State Highway 70 and Beckerville Road regarding a crash involving a motorcycle and a car.
The motorcyclist was traveling west on Route 70 while a Toyota Camry was stopped at the intersection of Beckerville Road and Route 70 attempting to make a left turn onto Route 70 east.
According to police, a large passenger van was making a right turn onto Beckerville Road from the westbound shoulder and the Toyota Camry proceeded to accelerate and make a left turn. As the Toyota Camry entered the intersection, the motorcyclist continued straight through the intersection and impacted the driver side of the Toyota Camry.
After the initial impact, the motorcyclist was ejected, police said.
The motorcyclist, identified as 69-year-old Timothy J. O’Connor of Manchester, was medevacked to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune with severe injuries to the entirety of his body. He is listed in critical condition, police said.
The driver of the Toyota Camry, identified as 35-year-old Carlos I. Hernandez of Toms River, did not suffer any injuries.
Assisting at the scene were Fire Fighters and EMT’s from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Medical Services, Paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Life Flight.
At this time, authorities state that failure to yield to oncoming traffic is the primary contributing factor in the crash.
This crash is being investigated by Patrolman Conner Yatauro of the department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
