LAKEHURST – First responders continue to battle a large wildfire that’s confined inside Joint Base McGuire Dix Lakehurst.

The blaze was first reported on Friday, when Joint Base personnel notified the public of the ongoing fire. On Monday, a follow-up stated that crews were implementing back burning strategies to prevent the spread.

Residents in Ocean and Burlington counties have been impacted by smoke from the wildfire as a result, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service said.

Additionally, the Fire Service had implemented statewide Stage 3 Fire Restrictions in response to prolonged dry conditions and increased wildfire activity. This prohibits all fires unless they are contained in an elevated stove using only propane, natural gas or electricity. No wood or charcoal fires are allowed, and the use of kerosene or gas torches of any kind is prohibited while this level of restriction is in place.

On Tuesday, the military base provided another update as the fire has not been fully extinguished – yet remains confined within the JB MDL range area, officials said.

“Wildland crews successfully implemented back firing strategies which contained the fire in place. Residents may see increased smoke as a result,” JB MDL said.

At this time, no structures are threatened, and no personnel have been evacuated. The JB MDL Fire Department continues to closely monitor the fire.
