OCEAN COUNTY – Residents and visitors to Ocean County can expect a smoke condition stemming from the Jones Road Wildfire which has been burning since Tuesday, April 22. Communities most impacted by the smoke include Lacey and Ocean townships.

New Jersey Forest Fire Service crews remain on scene to improve containment lines, mop-up hotspots along the fire perimeter and monitor the fire area. Those passing through the area on the Garden State Parkway should not report smoke while driving through the area unless active flames are observed.

Additionally, please stay out of the fire area. The Forest Fire Service continues to actively work to contain the fire. Entering the area not only puts your safety at risk, but also disrupts our firefighting efforts.

The smoke condition is being caused by the fire consuming interior unburnt pockets within the fire’s containment area. The fire has also burned down into the duff layer of soil causing additional smoke.

Higher humidity in the evening and overnight hours cause smoke to lay low to the ground. Smoke is expected to remain present until significant rain falls over the fire area.

It is recommended that area residents with respiratory conditions keep windows closed and limit outdoor activity.

As always, if ever in doubt about the source of smoke or fire, call 9-1-1 or 877-WARN-DEP (877-927-6337).
