BERKELEY – Two hikers who lost their way in the Dover Forge woods were safely located Saturday after a search by Berkeley Township Police officers using drones and ATVs, authorities said.

Police said the department received a call at 2:20 p.m. August 16 from a woman who reported that she and a man had entered the wooded area around 9 a.m. and could not find their way back to their vehicle.

A search effort was launched by Sgt. Houle, Patrolmen Shan and Slocum, with support from the Police Drone Unit – Patrolmen DeDeyn, Scaturro and Bondulich – and the ATV Unit led by Sgt. Flanegan and Patrolman Bondulich, officials said.

After about 2.5 hours, the two individuals were located at 5:15 p.m. by a drone about 150 yards from a creek, police said. Both hikers were able to follow the drone’s guidance to reach officers.

Berkeley Township EMS evaluated the pair at the scene, and they were released without injuries.
