OCEAN COUNTY – A predawn crash on the northbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway claimed one life and sent two others to area hospitals early Sunday, authorities said.
The collision occurred shortly before sunrise on December 21 near mile marker 73, just south of Exit 74 by County Route 614. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority reported the crash at approximately 6:12 a.m., prompting a large emergency response.
First responders arriving at the scene confirmed one person was pronounced dead. Two additional occupants involved in the crash were treated for injuries, though the severity of those injuries was not immediately released.
The right shoulder of the parkway remained closed for an extended period as state troopers, firefighters and emergency medical crews worked at the scene. Traffic slowed significantly through the area during the morning hours.
Officials have not yet released the cause of the crash, and the identities of those involved were being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The incident remains under investigation.
