TOMS RIVER – Ocean County authorities are investigating a fatal late-night crash in Toms River that left one woman dead and another driver hospitalized.

Police were called to the area of Lakewood Road and Whitty Road at approximately 11:05 p.m. March 7 after receiving reports of a serious motor vehicle crash, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.

An investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad and the Toms River Township Police Department determined that a Volkswagen Jetta was traveling south on Lakewood Road when it struck a guardrail on the passenger side. The impact caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, sending it into the northbound lane where it collided head-on with a Honda Accord.

The woman driving the Honda was rushed to Community Medical Center in Toms River. Despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The driver of the Volkswagen was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Authorities said he was listed in stable condition.

Officers who responded to the crash reported that the Volkswagen driver appeared to be impaired. As part of the investigation, authorities obtained a court order to draw a blood sample from the driver while he was being treated at the hospital.

Investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The incident remains under investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Toms River Township Police Department and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
