OCEAN COUNTY — A Lakewood woman has been charged after police investigated a reported bias harassment incident involving neighbors earlier this week, authorities said.
Lakewood police said officers responded March 10 to a home on Clydebank after receiving a report of harassment. According to investigators, the complainant told officers a neighbor had shouted derogatory and offensive remarks at her as she walked past the residence.
Police said officers then spoke with the neighbor, identified as Sandra Eaton, 71. During that interaction, Eaton allegedly continued making derogatory remarks in front of officers.
After reviewing the incident, authorities approved criminal charges. Eaton was charged with bias intimidation under 2C:16-1A(1), with harassment under 2C:33-4A listed as the underlying offense. Police said she was served with a summons and is expected to appear in court at a later date.
“Lakewood is a diverse community where everyone deserves to feel safe and respected,” Police Chief Gregory Meyer said. “Behavior that targets someone based on who they are has no place in our neighborhoods, and we will take appropriate action whenever incidents like this are reported.”
Authorities said the charge is an accusation only, and Eaton is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
