NEW JERSEY — Officials are warning residents about a text-message scam that falsely claims recipients owe money for a traffic violation.
Residents have reported getting a message designed to resemble an official notice from New Jersey courts, according to the alert. The text tells recipients they committed a traffic offense and urges them to scan a QR code or go to a website to submit payment.
Authorities said the message is fraudulent.
Law enforcement agencies and court officials do not notify people of traffic violations by text in that way, and they do not instruct recipients to pay fines through QR codes or unofficial websites, according to the warning.
Officials urged anyone who receives the message not to click links, scan codes or send money. The alert comes as scammers continue using fake government-style notices to pressure people into making quick payments.
