JACKSON — The Jackson Township Police Department is mourning the loss of retired Sgt. Kevin Low, a decorated officer and Army veteran remembered for his decades of service to both his country and community.

Low, identified by the department as Sgt. Kevin Low #137 (Ret.), joined the Jackson Township Police Department in September 1975 after serving in the United States Army. Before beginning his law enforcement career, he graduated from Keansburg High School in 1969 and enlisted in the Army, serving until March 1974. During his military service, he attained the rank of Specialist 4 and earned expert badges for both the M16 rifle and hand grenade.

Following his honorable discharge, Low worked for Ford Motor Company in Metuchen, where he developed a lifelong passion for automobiles and classic cars shared with his family.

During his 25-year career with Jackson police, Low worked several assignments before transferring to the Investigative Services Division in May 1987. He was promoted to sergeant in August 1994 and took command of the department’s midnight shift.

The department said Low earned numerous commendations throughout his career for acts of bravery and professionalism, including assisting in a homicide investigation while off duty, capturing fleeing suspects and aiding Lakewood police during a high-speed pursuit.

Among his official honors were a Ribbon of Commendation for bravery in dangerous circumstances, the Excellent Police Duty Ribbon for apprehending two auto theft suspects on his own, a Good Conduct Ribbon and a Veterans of Foreign Wars commendation recognizing his Vietnam War-era service.

Police officials also recalled Low’s handling of an armed and intoxicated individual in a residential neighborhood, an incident that ended peacefully without injuries.

Low retired from the department in September 2000 and spent his retirement with his wife, Dr. Patricia West-Low.

In a statement, the department said Low’s legacy continues to resonate within the agency and among officers who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

“His name is still spoken in the halls by those who still had the honor of working with him,” the department said.

Funeral arrangements were not included in the announcement.
