JACKSON – An 18-year-old Jackson Township resident has been charged with murder after authorities said he fatally stabbed his grandmother inside a township apartment Monday morning.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said Louis Brown was charged May 18 with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with the death of 69-year-old Darlene Brown, also of Jackson.

Police were called to a residence on Justin Way in the Jackson Green Apartment Complex around 7 a.m. after a 911 caller reported that someone had been killed. Officers arriving at the scene found Louis Brown standing in the front doorway of the home. Authorities said Brown exited the residence with his hands raised and was taken into custody without incident while officers investigated.

Inside the home, officers discovered Darlene Brown dead in an upstairs bedroom with what appeared to be stab wounds to her face and neck.

Investigators also found two knives protruding from the victim, according to prosecutors.

A joint investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Jackson Township Police Department Detective Bureau and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit determined that Louis Brown placed the 911 call and was responsible for his grandmother’s death, officials said.

Brown was transported to the Ocean County Jail, where he remains pending a detention hearing.

Billhimer praised the efforts of the prosecutor’s office, Jackson police, the sheriff’s crime scene unit and the Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office for their work in the investigation.

The charges are accusations, and Brown is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
