LAKEWOOD — A Toms River man has been arrested in connection with the theft of a boat engine from a marina on Lake Carasaljo, police said.
The Lakewood Police Department announced that William Cottrell, 41, was charged following an investigation into the theft of a Mercury boat engine from Traveling Tykes Marina.
Police said officers responded to the marina on April 23, after receiving a report that the engine had been removed from a vessel owned by the marina.
Detectives used multiple investigative methods during the investigation, which ultimately led authorities to identify Cottrell as the suspect, according to police.
On May 19, Cottrell was charged with burglary and theft-related offenses and was taken into custody without incident.
Police Chief Gregory H. Meyer commended the officers and detectives involved in the investigation.
“This investigation is a great example of the persistence and teamwork displayed by our officers and detectives,” Meyer said. “Their efforts, along with the assistance of our law enforcement partners, helped bring this case to a successful conclusion.”
Authorities said the investigation involved assistance from the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office, Seaside Heights Police Department, Toms River Police Department and Lakewood Shomrim.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Charges are accusations, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
