FREEHOLD – A 19-year-old Long Branch woman has been charged in a fatal hit-and-run that killed a West Long Branch pedestrian earlier this month, authorities said.

Jennifer Perez-Martinez is charged with first-degree vehicular homicide and second-degree leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago announced Saturday.

Long Branch police were called at about 8:46 p.m. May 1 to the area of 258 Broadway after receiving a report that a vehicle had struck a pedestrian.

Investigators determined Perez-Martinez was allegedly driving while impaired in a designated school zone when her vehicle hit Armindo A. Vieira, 57, as he tried to get into his parked vehicle on Broadway, authorities said. She then allegedly drove away from the scene.

Vieira was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9:38 p.m.

The investigation was conducted by the Long Branch Police Department, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident Unit and the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team.

Assistant Prosecutor Caitlin J. Sidley of the Major Crimes Bureau is handling the case. Perez-Martinez is represented by Matthew Jordan, an attorney based in Neptune Township.

The charges are accusations. Perez-Martinez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
