LAKEWOOD — A 20-year-old Toms River man remained in critical condition after being seriously injured early Wednesday when his car left the roadway, struck multiple objects and overturned, police said.

Lakewood police said officers were called to East Seventh Street and New York Avenue at about 12:57 a.m. May 27 for a report of an overturned vehicle.

When officers arrived, they found a 2023 Hyundai Elantra on its passenger side with the driver trapped inside. Officers quickly freed the man from the vehicle and began providing aid until emergency medical crews arrived, police said.

The driver was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center with serious injuries.

According to a preliminary investigation, the Hyundai was heading west on East Seventh Street when it veered off the road, hit a utility pole, crossed the front lawn of a home, struck an unoccupied parked vehicle and overturned.

Police said there was no indication at this stage that impairment contributed to the crash.

The Lakewood Police Department Traffic Safety Unit responded and is continuing to investigate.

Police Chief Gregory H. Meyer credited the responding officers and emergency crews for their quick response.

“This was a chaotic and dangerous scene, and the quick actions of our officers and EMS personnel undoubtedly gave this young man the best possible chance,” Meyer said. “We continue to keep him and his family in our thoughts as the investigation continues.”
