BARNEGAT — The Barnegat Township School District is entering a leadership transition as Superintendent Dr. Brian Latwis prepares to step down after eight years at the helm, ending a tenure marked by structural changes, academic progress and expanded opportunities for students.

As the district begins its search for a permanent replacement, the Barnegat Township Board of Education is inviting parents, guardians, students, staff and community members to take part in a stakeholder input session aimed at shaping the profile of the district’s next superintendent.

The session is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, at the Barnegat Township High School Media Center. It will be facilitated by Robert Acerra, a field service representative with the New Jersey School Boards Association.

District officials said feedback gathered during the forum will be used to help the board identify the background, leadership experience, training and technical skills needed in the next superintendent.

Acerra is expected to explain the search timeline, which typically runs 11 to 14 weeks, and outline the roles of the board, staff, administration and community during the process. Participants also will discuss the district’s strengths, future challenges and the leadership qualities they believe are essential in Barnegat’s next schools chief.

The forum will focus on several key questions, including what professional background and instructional training the next superintendent should bring, what issues the district may face over the next three to five years and what question residents would want final candidates to answer during board interviews.

For those unable to attend, the district plans to make anonymous online surveys available after the in-person session concludes. Officials said the survey links will be posted at barnegatschools.com following the June 9 meeting to ensure all participants begin with the same information.
