BRICK — A kitchen fire at the Brownstone Pancake Factory was contained Wednesday morning by the restaurant’s sprinkler system, preventing the flames from spreading and allowing staff to evacuate safely, fire officials said.
Brick Township police dispatchers received a call at about 8:26 a.m. June 10 reporting smoke at the restaurant, located at 979 Cedarbridge Ave. Fire District 1 companies were sent to the scene, and a second alarm was quickly activated after flames were seen coming from the kitchen.
Pioneer Hose Fire Company Chief Vincent Pischettola arrived and took command of the scene. Officials said the fire was controlled by a single sprinkler head after an employee moved a large pot of burning oil.
Firefighters secured the sprinkler system, cleaned up damage in the area and ventilated smoke from the building.
The Ocean County Department of Health also responded. The Brick Township Bureau of Fire Safety was asked to investigate, with Assistant Fire Marshal Aubrey Borden assigned to the case.
No injuries were reported. Officials said only a few employees were working at the time, and they left the building after the fire alarm sounded.
Fire officials said the incident showed the importance of following directions from store management and emergency personnel during an emergency. They also credited the restaurant’s working sprinkler and alarm systems with limiting the damage.
The restaurant is expected to reopen after the systems are restored, officials said.
