STAFFORD — Two men were rescued Tuesday after their sailboat overturned in rough waters in Barnegat Bay, police said.
The Stafford Township Police Department said officers were called about 4:45 p.m. June 16 for a report of a capsized sailboat near Cedar Run Dock Road.
Sgt. Christopher Smith responded and spotted the overturned vessel about 200 yards offshore. Police said conditions on the bay were rough at the time, making the situation difficult for the two men in the water.
The sailboat was owned and operated by Mark Vizer, 78, of Ship Bottom. His passenger was Michael Fields, 73, of New York, police said.
A nearby resident, James “Diamond” Sprague, saw what happened and used his own boat to reach the men. Police said Sprague pulled both men from the water, brought them aboard and took them safely back to shore.
Officers Adam Sherer and Justin Barbuto later arrived aboard the Stafford Township Police Department Marine Unit vessel. The Stafford Township First Aid Squad evaluated Vizer and Fields, who were not injured. Both men were later given a ride home.
The U.S. Coast Guard Station Barnegat Light also assisted at the scene. The sailboat was later recovered by Sea Tow.
Police thanked Sprague for acting quickly and helping bring the incident to a safe conclusion.
