LAKEWOOD — A township man is facing charges in connection with a residential burglary and the theft of a vehicle from an auto repair shop less than a week later, police said.

Anthony Bivins Jr., 48, of Lakewood, was arrested following two separate investigations conducted by the Lakewood Police Department.

Officers were called to a home July 6 after a resident encountered a man carrying several Milwaukee power tools that had allegedly been taken from the property.

Police said the man returned the tools before riding away on a bicycle while wearing a jacket belonging to the homeowner.

Investigators identified Bivins as the suspect and took him into custody. He was charged with burglary and theft of movable property and was taken to the Ocean County Jail.

Police said Bivins was linked to a second case on July 12 involving a 2018 Nissan Altima that disappeared from a Lakewood repair shop. The vehicle had been left at the business for transmission work.

The Altima was later found elsewhere in the township. Investigators developed information identifying Bivins as the person suspected of taking it, police said.

He was arrested and charged with third-degree unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.

Police Chief Gregory Meyer credited patrol officers and detectives with quickly identifying the suspect and completing both investigations.

The charges are accusations. Bivins is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
