JACKSON – The July 14 Township Council meeting was unexpectedly canceled after municipal officials were notified of a potential safety concern involving the meeting location, according to a post on the township’s official Facebook page and an email sent to the community.

“Unfortunately, Council President Mordechai Burnstein has made the difficult decision to cancel tonight’s Township Council meeting after Township officials were notified this afternoon of a potential safety concern involving the meeting location,” the message stated.

“While he was looking forward to meeting with residents, hearing public comments and discussing the evening’s agenda, the safety of everyone in attendance must come first. Out of an abundance of caution, tonight’s meeting has been canceled,” the message added.

Township fire officials are working with the State Fire Marshal’s Office and are awaiting further guidance. Depending on the outcome, other meetings scheduled in the Town Hall meeting room this week could also be canceled.

The township said updates will be posted on its website as soon as more information becomes available.

Mayor Jennifer Kuhn and Council President Burnstein were contacted by Jersey Shore Online to determine whether an issue involving newly installed handicapped-accessible doors within the municipal complex played a role in the cancellation.

Council President Burnstein said the newly installed doors were not fire-rated and that the township attorney advised officials the Township would be in violation of applicable fire code requirements if the meeting were held.

According to the township, the council intends to reschedule the meeting as soon as possible. The new date and required public notice will be posted once finalized.

Residents with questions, comments or concerns are encouraged to contact Burnstein at mburnstein@jacksontwpnj.net.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding as the Township works through this situation while keeping the safety of our residents and employees the top priority,” the message concluded.
