BRICK – The first Brick Board of Education meeting after school let out for the summer was short but meaningful. It was the last meeting for outgoing Business Administrator James Edwards, who is retiring from his position. But Brick Schools are not without a BA heading into the next session.
The Board voted to approve the appointment of Maria Roberts, current Assistant Business Administrator, to the positions of Business Administrator/Board Secretary for the effective term starting July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027. Her salary will be $192,000, pending Executive County Superintendent approval, according to Brick Schools website.
Roberts spoke after the meeting about how important it was to her to receive the appointment.
“It means a lot,” she said. “I’ve been in this district a long time. I have been the Assistant Business Administrator 10 years before Mr. Edwards started and during his whole tenure here. I’ve always supported him. As I said before (at the podium) I’m not easily excited, but I do show enthusiasm for work. Now I get to show enthusiasm on a greater level.”
Roberts, who said she already knows most of the people who work for Brick Schools, said she has plans for the future and is already working on them. “I really look forward to take it to the next level.”
She expressed her gratitude to the board and the community for the appointment. No other commentors spoke during either of the two public comment sections, both in the beginning of the meeting and towards the end.
Superintendent Dr. Thomas Farrell, Ed. D, of Brick Schools, spoke kindly about Edwards retiring and then welcomed Roberts to that position.
Board of Education members thanked Edwards for all his hard work during his tenure. They also expressed their support for Roberts as she takes the helm in her new position.
The rest of the meeting revolved around end of school year projects and budget information. This included air conditioning project updates at some of the schools.
The Board accepted donations during the session. This included two electric guitars and one bass guitar to the BMHS Visual and Performing Arts Band. Also, a Yamaha upright piano from Mr. and Mrs. Farkouh was donated to the district. Also in Operations, was the business to ratify the submission and acceptance of the Targeted Summer Supplemental High Impact Tutoring Grant for $269,400, according to the minutes.
The Board approved two law firms to work for them from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027. Porzio, Bromberg & Newman were chosen for “State Aid Litigation Services.” Rothstein, Mandell, Strohm, Halm & Cipriani were chosen for “Legal Counsel Services.” The next Board of Education meeting is scheduled for July 28 at 5:30 pm. and will be held at the Brick Professional Development Center at 101 Hendrickson Ave. For more information about meetings along with the current agenda, visit brickschools.org.
