BARNEGAT – A township woman has been charged in connection with a Memorial Day boating crash that killed her 28-year-old son on Barnegat Bay, according to authorities and court records.
New Jersey 101.5 was first to report that Jennifer L. Pearson, 59, faces charges of reckless vessel homicide and operating a vessel while under the influence in the May 25 death of Gunnar Pearson. She also received several related boating citations.
New Jersey State Police said Jennifer Pearson turned herself in on August 19 at the agency’s Tuckerton station. She was being held in the Ocean County Jail pending a court appearance.
Authorities said Pearson was operating a boat near Brant Beach on Long Beach Island when it collided with a day marker at approximately 5:45 p.m. The impact threw Gunnar Pearson and another passenger into the water.
Gunnar Pearson was transported to a hospital, where he died later that evening.
The Memorial Day collision was one of three fatal boating crashes involving navigational markers on Barnegat Bay this summer.
The charges against Jennifer Pearson are accusations. She is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
