STAFFORD – A 13-year-old Manahawkin boy was taken to a local trauma center after his e-bike collided with a vehicle in Stafford Township, police said.
Officers responded to the intersection of Lighthouse Drive and Buccaneer Lane at approximately 8 p.m. Sept. 1.
A preliminary investigation found that a vehicle was turning left from Lighthouse Drive onto Buccaneer Lane when an e-bike traveling along the shoulder of Lighthouse Drive struck its passenger side, according to police.
The teenage rider suffered injuries to his face and head and was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for evaluation and treatment.
Police identified the vehicle’s driver as Timothy McGinnis, 24, of Manahawkin. He was not injured.
Investigators said the e-bike did not have a working headlight or taillight despite being operated after dark. Police also said it was uninsured and unregistered.
The teen allegedly did not have the license required to operate the e-bike and was not wearing a helmet that met U.S. Department of Transportation standards.
The Stafford Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit continues to investigate the crash. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information is asked to contact Traffic Safety Officer Barnett at 609-597-1189, ext. 8490.
Police urged parents and guardians to learn the classification and legal requirements of any e-bike used by their children. Riders should use required lights and reflective equipment, wear an approved helmet and follow all licensing, registration and insurance rules.
