LAKEHURST – A Manchester Township school bus collided with a pickup truck before crashing into a Union Avenue home Thursday morning, police said. No students were aboard the bus.
Lakehurst police responded to the area of Union Avenue and Lilac Street at approximately 6:22 a.m. on September 10.
Investigators said the bus was traveling east on Union Avenue when it crossed the center line while rounding a curve. The bus struck the back of a westbound Ford F-250, causing the pickup to spin and become disabled in the road.
The bus then left the roadway and struck the front of a Union Avenue residence, police said.
The bus driver, John Murray Jr., 64, of Toms River, and the pickup driver, David Cella, 47, of Manchester, sustained minor injuries. Both were evaluated at a local hospital.
The vehicles suffered extensive damage. Authorities did not report any injuries inside the residence.
Union Avenue remained closed for approximately 3½ hours while emergency crews secured the area and officers conducted their initial investigation.
The Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, Lakehurst First Aid Squad, Manchester Emergency Medical Services, Manchester police, the Manchester building inspector and Priced Rite Towing assisted at the scene.
Officer Gavin Riedinger is investigating the crash. Police said failure to maintain a lane appears to have been the primary contributing factor.
