TOMS RIVER – A juvenile has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a 2022 shooting that wounded a motorist traveling on the Garden State Parkway, authorities said. Because the case involves a juvenile, state law prohibits authorities from releasing additional identifying information.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said a juvenile delinquency complaint was filed Sept. 28 charging the individual with two counts of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Authorities said the accused was a juvenile when the shooting occurred Jan. 12, 2022.

New Jersey State Police were called to Community Medical Center in Toms River that day after a man arrived with a gunshot wound to his leg.

Investigators determined the victim had been involved in a verbal dispute with another person at the Exxon Mobil station near Route 37 and Commonwealth Boulevard in Toms River.

After leaving the gas station, the victim headed south on the Garden State Parkway while a Dodge Charger allegedly followed his vehicle.

Authorities said the driver of the Charger fired multiple shots at the victim’s vehicle while both were traveling on the Parkway. One of the bullets struck the victim in the leg.

A passenger drove the injured man to Community Medical Center. He was later transferred to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was treated and released.

The case remained under investigation for more than four years. Prosecutors said additional investigative work eventually identified the juvenile as the person allegedly driving the Charger and firing at the victim’s vehicle.

The accused is currently being held in connection with an unrelated matter, authorities said.

The investigation involved the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit and High Tech Crime Squad, New Jersey State Police, Toms River Township Police Department and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.

The charges are accusations. The juvenile is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
