JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST – If you live near Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, you already know the routine: sometimes the windows rattle, sometimes there is a distant boom and sometimes social media lights up with one question — “What was that?”
In October, the answer may simply be military training.
The base has released its October 2026 noise calendar, and most of the month is expected to bring moderate noise from training activity. The loudest day is scheduled for Oct. 8, when high noise levels are anticipated.
Those higher-noise exercises can include heavy crew weapons training, mortar live fire, howitzer fire and cratering charges. Moderate-noise days may involve rotary-wing aerial gunnery, .50-caliber weapons, rocket fire and rotary cannons.
In other words, residents may hear a few of those familiar “sounds of freedom” during the month.

And for anyone new to the area, it is worth remembering: this is a large, active military installation. Training is part of life around Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, so an occasional boom does not necessarily mean something unusual is happening.
Oct. 31 is listed as a low-noise day, which could include small-arms fire and rifle training.
Base officials note that the calendar reflects the highest expected noise levels. Actual conditions can vary, and cloud cover can sometimes cause sound to travel farther than usual.
Training schedules and noise levels may also change without notice because of weather or operational requirements.
Residents with questions or concerns can contact the base at 609-754-2575.
