TOMS RIVER — Discount grocer Lidl has signed a lease for a 19,433-square-foot store at Toms River Center, adding another supermarket to the Route 37 shopping plaza. The center used to be home to a Super Foodtown which closed 11 years ago.

Catalyst Real Estate Partners, which brokered the transaction, announced the agreement on Instagram. An opening date was not provided.

The shopping center at 1 Route 37 West, just east of Garden State Parkway Interchange 82, includes Kohl’s, Planet Fitness, Five Below, T-Mobile and Jersey Mike’s.

Restaurant Depot also is moving into the center, occupying part of the former Foodtown.

Catalyst did not identify which space Lidl will occupy.

The real estate firm highlighted the center’s access to the Parkway and Route 37, positioning it to serve local shoppers and motorists traveling toward the Jersey Shore.

Based in Neckarsulm, Germany, Lidl entered the U.S. market in 2017 with stores in Virginia and the Carolinas. The chain has since expanded across New Jersey.

Its nearby locations include stores at 2770 Hooper Ave. in Brick Township and 514 Route 9 in Lacey Township.

The Lacey location opened in 2019 as Lidl’s first Ocean County store, followed by the Brick location in December 2020.

Shoppers can pick up free copies of The Brick Times at Lidl’s Brick location, The Southern Ocean Times at its Lacey store and The Howell Times at its Freehold location. We plan to contact Lidl about offering The Toms River Times at the new Toms River store when it opens.
