MANCHESTER – A 73-year-old Whiting woman was flown to a trauma center after her SUV struck a utility pole and wooden fence before overturning on Route 539, police said.
Officers responding near New Mexico Drive around 5:45 p.m. Oct. 28 found a black 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross resting on its side, according to Manchester Township police.
Investigators said the SUV was heading south when it left the right side of the road, hit the pole and fence, and overturned. The vehicle sustained extensive damage, trapping driver Cathy Stone inside.
Emergency crews freed Stone, who was taken by medical helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center with multiple injuries police described as not life-threatening. She was listed in stable condition and had been wearing a seat belt, police said.
Manchester Township Emergency Medical Services, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital paramedics, firefighters from Whiting, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst and Forked River, and Accurate Towing assisted at the scene.
Police identified failure to maintain a lane as the suspected primary contributing factor. Patrolmen Keith Douglas and Brenden Brush of the department’s Traffic Safety Unit are continuing the investigation.
