BERKELEY – Authorities are currently investigating a brush fire that started yesterday afternoon.

Police said the fire was reported around 2:20 p.m. in a wooded area inside Johnson’s Pit (a former mining facility that’s now a place people go for offroading). First responders immediately located and extinguished the small brush fire.

The Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office and New Jersey State Forest Fire Service determined that there were three separate fires, including one inside an unoccupied tent. Further investigation also determined that the fire had three separate points of origin and were intentionally set. An open flame to available combustibles cannot be eliminated as to the cause, officials said.

At this time, the fire is under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Christopher Bonner of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-929-2027, extension 2449 or Detective William Sommers of the Berkeley Township Police Department at 732-341-1132, ext. 2111.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer acknowledged the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Unit, Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office, Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, Berkeley Township Police Department Patrol Division, Berkeley Township Police Department Detective Bureau, and the New Jersey State Forest Fire Service for their cooperative assistance in connection with this investigation
