  TOMS RIVER – Law enforcement officials have arrested a man who attempted to rob a bank and successfully robbed another within minutes Tuesday afternoon.

  The first incident occurred around 2 p.m. at the First Financial Bank on Route 9. According to Toms River Township Police, a middle-aged white male wearing a dark hooded sweat shirt, sunglasses, dark pants, and a surgical mask gave a note to the teller demanding money. However, her left on foot prior before receiving any proceeds.

  The second incident occurred minutes later at the Santander Bank just north of the first location on Route 9. A man fitting the same description handed the teller a note, and left the bank on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.

  The investigation led police to identify 68-year-old Daniel McCarthy as the suspect and he was located at a motel in East Brunswick along with a minivan that was found to be used during the robberies. As a result, McCarthy was arrested.

  McCarthy has prior addresses in both Jackson and East Brunswick, police said.

  He was charged with one count of 2nd degree robbery and one count of 2nd degree attempted robbery. Additional charges are pending further investigation by the agencies involved. McCarthy will be lodged in the Ocean County Jail pending an upcoming bail hearing.
