WHITING – An 88-year-old resident suffered injuries after she crashed her sport utility vehicle into two businesses in the Whiting Commons shopping plaza Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Manchester Township Police were called to the scene at 400 Lacey Road on January 18 at around 1:32 p.m. due to a vehicle vs. building crash.

Officers found a 2020 black Hyundai Tucson with front end damage against the H&R Block office and Wine World store.

According to police, the car, driven by Mary McGowan of Whiting, was traveling through one of the parking aisles of the lot when the vehicle began to accelerate. The Hyundai then drove over the curb, onto the sidewalk and slammed into the building.

Both H&R Block and Wine World suffered extensive damage.

McGowan suffered multiple injuries to her neck, back, chest and face. She was taken to Community Medical Center by ambulance for apparent non-life-threatening injuries.

McGowan was found to have been wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and the Hyundai had multiple airbag deployment.

Assisting at the scene were EMTs and Firefighters from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Services, Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, and Robert Wood Johnson Paramedic, as well as the Manchester Township Building Inspector.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing but at this point, driver error appears to be the primary contributing factor.

This crash is being investigated by Patrolman Michael O’Hara of the department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
