  BRICK – Authorities have released the name of the victim who perished in a hit-and-run crash in Brick Township.

  Julia Sutton, 56, of Weehawken, died in a crash on January 13 in the area of Route 35 South and Bay Avenue.

  Around 9:15 a.m., officers found Sutton, who was a pedestrian, struck by a vehicle in the shoulder of the roadway. She was taken to Hackensack Meridian Ocean University Medical Center in Brick Township, where she was pronounced deceased.

  According to police, Sutton was struck and killed by a 1999 Ford Explorer registered to Mark Carey, Jr., 19, of South Amboy. Authorities determined that Carey was driving the car at the time of the crash, and fled the scene.

  Carey was taken into custody at his home in South Amboy without incident, and thereafter processed at Brick Police Headquarters. He was charged with Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident Resulting in the Death of Another.

  Carey was subsequently transported to the Ocean County Jail, where he presently remains lodged pending a detention hearing.

  Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer acknowledged the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Brick Police, Bay Head Police, Lavallette Police, Seaside Heights Police, Seaside Park Police, Point Pleasant Beach Police, Lacey Township Police, Toms River Police, Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, Ocean County Vehicle Services Department, and City of South Amboy Police, for their combined and collective assistance in connection with this investigation that resulted in Carey’s apprehension.
