MANCHESTER – A Township woman was sent to a trauma center after crashing into a utility pole due to an unknown medical event, police said.

Around 6 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to the area of Pinewald Keswick Road and Pine Ridge Boulevard regarding a crash.

According to police, a blue 2013 Hyundai Elantra was traveling west on Pinewald Keswick Road when it left the roadway and struck the utility pole. After hitting the pole, the car then overturned several times before coming to a stop in the wooded area in the northbound side of Pinewald Keswick Road.

In addition to the damaged pole, there were wires lying on top of the Hyundai. Due to the live wires, JCP&L responded to the scene to assist with safely removing the driver from the vehicle.

The driver, identified as 75-year-old Kathleen Smith of Manchester, was brought to Jersey Shore University Hospital via ambulance for treatment and evaluation of her non-life threatening injuries.

Assisting at the scene were Emergency Medical Technicians from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Services, Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, Paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L) and Accurate Towing.

Investigation is ongoing. However, police believe the primary contributing factor of the crash is an unknown medical event.

This crash is being investigated by Ptl. Brendan Brush of the department’s Traffic Safety Section.
