STAFFORD – A house in Ocean Acres has significant fire damage after a car exploded in its garage Thursday, police said.
Emergency crews responded to 1001 Vessel Lane around 2:15 p.m. regarding a vehicle fire. According to police, the house had been vacant for several months; However, an adult man was working on a car in the house’s garage at the time of the fire.
The man was attempting to remove debris from the vehicle’s gas tank when an explosion occurred, igniting both the car and the home, police said. The blaze originated in the garage and had quickly spread to the home.

The man sustained minor burns to his arm, was assessed by EMS on scene, and refused further medical treatment, police said.
Officials determined the fire to be accidental and is not considered suspicious at this time.
