TOMS RIVER – A Township man was apprehended for eluding police in a stolen car, police said.

Around 11 p.m. November 8, Officer Michael Weg of the Toms River Police Department observed a car that was reported stolen out of Bridgewater with reported stolen dealer plates at a traffic light on Route 37.

After the driver turned into a nearby parking lot Officer Weg turned his overhead lights on and attempted to approach the car. However, the driver, 40-year-old Dylan Panatero of Toms River, abruptly maneuvered out of the spot and exited the parking lot.

A pursuit was initiated and Panatero continued to drive recklessly at a high rate of speed. He ultimately lost control of his car and collided into a stopped vehicle at the light of Fischer Boulevard and Yellowbank Road, police said.

Panatero sustained minor injury and was transported to Community Medical Center for treatment. The other driver was treated at the scene by EMS and refused further medical treatment.

Panatero was charged with second degree eluding. A complaint warrant was generated charging Panatero with eluding, receiving stolen property, assault by auto, and crash with injury while suspended. He was also issued several motor vehicle violations.

The stolen vehicle was impounded and the owner was notified.
