LAKEHURST – Borough Police responded to a recent motor vehicle accident that caused the closure of a portion of Route 37.
Police responded at 10:44 a.m. on February 4 to a serious vehicle crash in the area of Route 37 and Brown Avenue. An on-scene investigation determined that a 2019 Ford F-150 pickup truck operated by Vito Petro, 78, of South Toms River was travelling east on Route 37 approaching the Sunoco gas station.
A 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis operated by Harry Paulson, 99, of Manchester Township was exiting the Sunoco gas station located at 200 Route 37 and collided with the 2019 Ford F-150 pickup truck.
The initial collision caused the Grand Marquis to exit the roadway and come to a rest near the wooded area in the eastbound lane of Route 37.
Petro sustained minor injuries and was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River while Paulson suffered life threatening injuries and was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center by ambulance where he later succumbed to his injuries.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Paulson failed to yield to oncoming traffic exiting the Sunoco gas station. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage and were towed from the scene.
Route 37 in both directions was shut down for approximately one hour and the investigation into the crash continues, but at present, failure to stop or yield is the primary contributing factor.
This crash is being investigated by Lakehurst Officer Jean Verrier. Assisting at the scene were Lakehurst Volunteer Fire Department, Lakehurst Volunteer First Aid Squad, RWJ Paramedics, Manchester Division of Emergency Services and Priced Rite towing.
