TOMS RIVER – Thousands of homes and businesses in Toms River and Lakewood have been left with no power after a substation fire broke out Monday morning.

Around 12:30 p.m., the Toms River Police Department provided an update from JCP&L, as their crews work to restore power.

“Approximately 6,200 customers remain without power at this time, down from 9,900 total customers impacted. Crews will be working throughout the day to restore power to customers as fast as safely possible; however, we expect restoration efforts will last into the evening,” Jersey Central Power & Light said.

JCP&L also said that additional customers may experience a service interruption during the day as crews isolate and repair damaged equipment.

“We understand how difficult it is to be without power, especially on a hot, humid day. We appreciate your patience as we work to get all customers back up and running,” JCP&L said.
