MARLBORO – A Monmouth County Grand Jury has returned an indictment against a 38-year-old man in connection with a homicide that took place on New Year’s Day, officials said.
Carl A. Richards of Marlboro was charged with one count of first-degree Murder and three counts of second-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The Endangering charges stem from three children being present in the home at the time of the attack, officials said.
Around 12:49 a.m. on January 1, law enforcement responded to a home on Texas Road in the Morganville section of Marlboro Township for urgent medical attention for a man who had been assaulted.
The victim, 64-year-old George L. Mott III, was found unresponsive with severe trauma to his head, face, and neck. Mott was rushed to Old Bridge Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased at 1:49 a.m., officials said.
Authorities later discovered that a verbal dispute occurred between the two, and Richards physically assaulted the victim which led to his death. It was determined that both Mott and Richards reside at the home.
Richards was arrested and transported to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution (MCCI) where he remains incarcerated, as a motion by the State to keep him detained was granted.
Despite these charges, every defendant is presumed innocent, unless and until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, following a trial at which the defendant has all of the trial rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and State law.
