LAKEWOOD – A man was charged with installing an explosive in public that later wound up being inert.
Benjamin Gibber, 29, of Lakewood was charged with Creating a False Public Alarm.
He allegedly strapped it to a utility pole at the corner of 4th Street and Forest Avenue on November 19, 2023.
It was done “with the intent to deter someone from removing a poster that was designed to bring awareness to specific events occurring in the Israel-Hamas war,” police said, noting that this created “large scale unrest within the predominately Orthodox Jewish neighborhood.”
The New Jersey State Police Bomb Unit was one of the responders to the scene. After the grenade was extracted, it was determined to be inert.
Charges are merely accusations until proven in a court of law.
