TOMS RIVER – A Manchester Township man was injured after hitting a utility pole on Route 9 while passing a slow-moving front-end loader, police said.
The crash occurred around 3 p.m. Monday, when 62-year-old Maurice Tobin of Whiting was driving a 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLB south on Route 9 behind the front-end loader.
According to police, the front-end loader was making a left turn into a private driveway when Tobin tried to pass the vehicle. However, he swerved into a utility pole to avoid hitting the front-end loader, police said.
Witnesses said a pole with a transformer fell due to the crash. Traffic was detoured for several hours while the pole and wires were repaired.
Tobin was issued a summons for careless driving, police said.
Toms River Patrol Officer Taylor Boschetti was investigating the crash.
