BRICK — A South Amboy man has been sentenced to six years in New Jersey State Prison for leaving the scene of a fatal crash that killed a pedestrian in Brick Township last year, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced.
Mark Carey Jr., 21, was sentenced on June 13, 2025, by Superior Court Judge Kimarie Rahill following his April 3 guilty plea to knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in the death of another.
The charge stems from a hit-and-run collision that occurred on January 13, 2024, around 9:15 a.m., in the area of Route 35 South and Bay Avenue. According to investigators, Carey struck 56-year-old Julia Sutton of Weehawken while she was walking on the shoulder of the road. Carey then fled the scene. Sutton was transported to Hackensack Meridian Ocean University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
An investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Brick Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit determined that Carey was driving a 1999 Ford Explorer registered in his name at the time of the crash.
Carey was arrested at his South Amboy home without incident and initially held at the Ocean County Jail before being released under the state’s bail reform guidelines.
Prosecutor Billhimer credited the collaborative efforts of multiple local and county law enforcement agencies, including departments from Brick, Bay Head, Lavallette, Seaside Heights, Seaside Park, Mantoloking, Point Pleasant Beach, Lacey Township, Toms River, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office, and the City of South Amboy, for their work on the case.
