BRICK – The State Attorney General’s Office is investigating the death of a man who was brought to a hospital after an encounter with local police.
The Attorney General’s Office said that the incident started around 4:30 p.m. on May 9. Brick Police were dispatched to the area of Wisteria Drive and Vermont Drive in response to a man “in a state of active distress in the street.” His age and name were not released.
Officers handcuffed him and took him from the street to a nearby grassy area. EMS provided medical attention as well. The man was brought to Ocean University Medical Center in Brick. He was pronounced dead of an apparent medical episode at the hospital at approximately 5:48 p.m.
State law requires the Attorney General’s Office to investigate a death that takes place during an encounter with law enforcement or while they are in custody. The investigation is ongoing.
