OCEAN COUNTY – A serious accident on the Garden State Parkway in Toms River left a Berkeley Township man dead at the scene and tied up traffic for several miles.
New Jersey State Police confirmed that 56-year-old David Mello Jr. of Bayville was driving a garbage truck when it ran off the parkway crashing into multiple trees. Police said Mello was ejected from the truck and suffered fatal injuries. The truck overturned in the crash. No one else was injured and no other vehicles were involved.
The accident happened on June 9 in the area of mile marker 82.8 on the Garden State Parkway south shortly after 1 p.m.
It is unclear as to why the garbage truck left the roadway and police are continuing their investigation.
Although the roadway remained open during the initial call and cleanup, traffic had backed up almost 20 miles as a result.
