OCEAN COUNTY – A small airplane crashed in the early hours of the morning Sunday, setting off a wildfire that is now burning forest between Lacey and Berkeley Townships, according to a number of multiple published reports.

The Lakewood Scoop was the first media outlet in the area to report the plane going down in the woods between 1:30 and 2 a.m. on September 3.

WPVI-TV in Philadelphia reported that the aircraft was a Skyhawk SP singe-engine private plane that departed Pottstown, PA, and was heading to Toms River when it crashed near the Ocean County Airport.

Some news outlets reported that the pilot died, although the authorities have not confirmed that information.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service did confirm that they were working a wildfire in the area of the airpark with portions of Dover and Mule Roads closed.

Smoke was seen billowing from the forest and some residents in the area were on social media talking about the smoke.

This is a developing story and we will update you with new information as we get it.
