TOMS RIVER – An Ocean County man has been arrested and charged after crashing into a utility pole as a result of being intoxicated, police said.
Around 3:30 p.m. yesterday, first responders were dispatched to the intersection of Hooper Avenue and Water Street for a crash involving a pole and live wires down.
According to police, 56-year-old Richard Heaney was driving east on Water Street when he lost control of his car and hit a utility pole, ultimately coming to rest in a parking lot on E. Water Street.
Due to the crash, several cable/power lines were tangled around Heaney’s pickup truck and the pole was down across E. Water Street blocking traffic, with the wires burning the roadway.
Police said Heaney was uninjured during the crash, and he was charged with careless driving, reckless driving, failure to maintain a lane, and driving under the influence.
Widespread power outages were a result of the pole being down and emergency crews closed the road and worked through the night to fix damages.
Charges are merely accusations until proven in a court of law.
