POINT PLEASANT – A substitute teacher was charged with sending nude photos to a student and then trying to get her to delete them after he was fired.

Matthew Marinelli, 23, of Point Pleasant Borough, was charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Witness Tampering.

Police said that while he was working at Point Pleasant Borough High School in April and May of 2023, he sent nude photographs of himself to a student and engaged in communication with that student in a sexual nature via a website app.

The witness tampering charge is from accusations that he contacted the student multiple times after he was fired, asking that she deny having contact with him and to delete anything he sent her.

On July 7, police went to his home with a search warrant and recovered electronic devices.

“I would encourage parents to have a conversation with their children if they had Mr. Marinelli as a substitute teacher at Point Pleasant Borough High School. If anyone has additional information regarding Mr. Marinelli or this investigation, please contact Detective Jason LaRaia of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-929-2027, extension 3758,” Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said.

He acknowledged the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crime Unit, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, for their collaborative efforts in connection with this investigation.

Charges are merely accusations until proven in a court of law.
