ASBURY PARK – A 16-year-old has been identified as a suspect of a fatal shooting that took place late last week in Asbury Park, officials said.
The teenager, whose identity is being withheld due to his age, has had juvenile complaints of murder and two related weapons offenses filed against him. He currently remains in custody pending his next court appearance.
The shooting occurred on July 8 around 5:45 p.m. near the intersection of Prospect Avenue and Atlantic Avenue.
Dariel Vernet, 19, of Asbury Park suffered multiple gunshot injuries and was brought to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he was ultimately pronounced dead about one hour later. An autopsy performed the next day determined the manner of death was homicide.
Investigation identified the juvenile as a suspect, and he was taken into custody without incident on Tuesday evening.

Despite these juvenile complaints, every defendant is presumed innocent, unless and until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, following a trial at which the defendants have all of the trial rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and State law.
