BEACHWOOD – A Berkeley Township man has been arrested and charged after hitting a 17-year-old bicyclist and leaving the scene of the crash, authorities said.
Michael P. Gable, 56, was charged with Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Crash Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury to Another Person, Operating a Motor Vehicle While Unlicensed and Causing Serious Bodily Injury to Another Person, and Tampering with Evidence, all in connection with a motor vehicle crash that occurred in Beachwood on April 30.
Additionally, Michael A. Gable, 22, Michael P. Gable’s son, also of Berkeley Township, was charged with Hindering Apprehension of Another in connection with the same investigation.
Polie responded to the area of Mizzen Avenue and Locker Street regarding a car crash involving a bicyclist.
A 17-year-old was traveling northbound on Locker Street on an electric bicycle when he was struck at the intersection of Locker Street and Mizzen Avenue by a vehicle traveling eastbound on Mizzen Avenue, authorities said. The vehicle continued eastbound on Mizzen Avenue and failed to stop or call local authorities for assistance.
The victim sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he was treated and ultimately released, authorities said.
Detectives learned that the car involved in the crash was registered to Michael A. Gable. According to authorities, Michael A. Gable provided detectives with misinformation as to the location of the car and who was operating it. The car was later found at a business in Lacey Township.
Law enforcement determined that Michael P. Gable, Michael A. Gable’s father, was operating the vehicle at the time of the crash, and that he was unlicensed.
Michael P. Gable was taken into custody, charged accordingly, and transported to the Ocean County Jail where he is presently lodged pending a detention hearing. Michael A. Gable was charged with Hindering the Apprehension of Another, and served with the charge via summons pending an upcoming first appearance in Ocean County Superior Court.

The charges referenced above are merely accusations and the press and public are reminded that all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
