TOMS RIVER – A North Jersey teen has been charged in a hit-and-run crash that left one person dead and critically injured another, Ocean County authorities said.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that 18-year-old Abel Mathukutty of Lake Hiawatha in Morris County, was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash causing death and with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash causing serious bodily injury in the crash that happened just before 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2025.
The crash happened near the Aqua Blu Restaurant on the eastbound lanes of Route 37
Authorities said Mathukutty was driving an Infiniti and hit the driver’s side of a Mercedes sending it into a utility pole.
Instead of stopping, Mathukutty fled the scene and headed over the bridge into Seaside Heights.
The woman behind the wheel of the Mercedes died at Community Medical Center in Toms River. The male passenger was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune where he remains in critical condition. Their identities have not been released.
Officers from the Seaside Park Police Department were able to stop his car in town after hearing about the crash over the police radio. Officers noted that the vehicle had sustained heavy passenger side damage and that the airbags in the vehicle had been deployed.
Mathukutty was arrested and taken to the Ocean County Jail in Toms River, where he is being held pending a detention hearing.
